This AI tool is especially important because this is not just a generic SMART-goal generator. Our A.C.C.E.S.S. AI Goal-Setting Coach should teach students to create goals around independence, strategy use, self-advocacy, and measurable progress.
The key shift is:
“My teacher wants me to…” → “I want to become more independent at…” → “Here is what I will do…” → “Here is how I will measure my progress.”
A.C.C.E.S.S. Goal-Setting Coach
“Turn what I want to learn into what I can do independently.”
This is YOUR goal. Think about something you want to learn, improve, or do more independently.
A meaningful goal connects to something YOU care about. Why is this important to you?
Independence doesn’t always mean doing everything alone! Sometimes it means knowing when and how to use a tool or strategy.
Choose the specific learning strategy or action you will practice:
If you cannot tell whether you are making progress, the goal needs a measurement!
Select the tool or support that helps you access learning. (Remember: using a tool is smart strategy!)
How might you use this support more independently as you gain skill?
Here is your goal generated from your choices! You can edit any part to sound like YOU.

One thing I would protect in this AI tool
I would make independence more sophisticated than “doing it without help.”
That’s a trap in education.
For example, a student who independently uses text-to-speech to access a difficult text is demonstrating independence. A student who independently recognizes, “I don’t understand these directions; I need them chunked,” is demonstrating independence. A multilingual learner who independently uses a home-language resource before returning to the English task is demonstrating independence.
So your progression should be:
Supported → Guided → Strategic → Independent → Self-Advocating
—not simply:
With help → Without help.
That distinction makes our AI tool much more aligned with our A.C.C.E.S.S. framework, UDL, special education, multilingual learner support, and our broader Student Empowerment vision. It also gives us a much stronger conceptual foundation if these tools eventually become part of a larger A.C.C.E.S.S. AI Instructional System.
You are the calm in their storm. Keep showing up, keep tracking the data, and keep respecting their dignity. You’ve got this.
