Designing Lessons for Real Students: What My Classroom Has Taught Me About “STAR Reading Strategy Anchor Chart”

As a Special Education and English Learner teacher at my Washington DC school, I have spent a career working with students who find the act of reading to be an exercise in endurance rather than exploration. In my Digital Literacy class, I am the lead teacher for students with significant cognitive disabilities, many of whom … Read more

What 90 Minutes Changed: A.C.C.E.S.S. + HCAIT Continuum Webinar Case Study

Pre/post data from 14 Myanmar and SE Asia educators — and what the numbers reveal about what one well-designed 90 minutes can actually do I want to start with a number: 50 percent. That’s how many teachers in this webinar cohort arrived describing their AI practice as experimental or avoidant — dipping into tools occasionally, … Read more

Case Study: What 113 Pre-Service Teachers Said After One HCAIT Session

A data-driven case study: 113 pre-service teachers at PUP Mulanay completed pre/post surveys after a Human-Centered AI Teaching Continuum session. Here is what the data—and their own words—reveal.

AI Student-Led IEP Preparation Tool

This AI tool is one of the strongest additions to the A.C.C.E.S.S. AI system because it moves student empowerment into a very real special-education context: helping students prepare to participate in decisions about their own education.

It is designed around:

KNOW MYSELF → RECOGNIZE MY GROWTH → IDENTIFY MY NEEDS → EXPRESS MY VOICE → SET MY GOALS → PREPARE TO PARTICIPATE

And importantly, our AI tool prepares a student for an IEP meeting, not attempt to generate an IEP or make legal/eligibility decisions.

AI Student Conference Coach

This AI tool is a particularly powerful A.C.C.E.S.S. tool because it moves students from being passive participants in conferences to active owners of the conversation.

This builds the architecture around:

REFLECT → PREPARE → PRACTICE → COMMUNICATE → SELF-ADVOCATE → PLAN

The coach does not train students to give teachers the “right” answers. It helps them articulate what they know, what is difficult, what supports work, what they want to improve, and what they want their teacher to understand.

AI Study Strategy Coach

This AI tool connects very naturally with the Reflection Coach and Goal-Setting Coach. Here’s the central instructional move: Task → Demand → Barrier → Strategy → Practice → Check → Adjust The important part is that students don’t simply receive a list of study tips. They learn why a particular strategy fits a particular learning … Read more

AI Goal-Setting Coach

This AI tool is especially important because this is not just a generic SMART-goal generator. Our A.C.C.E.S.S. AI Goal-Setting Coach should teach students to create goals around independence, strategy use, self-advocacy, and measurable progress. The key shift is:

“My teacher wants me to…” → “I want to become more independent at…” → “Here is what I will do…” → “Here is how I will measure my progress.”

AI Metacognition Coach

This AI tool is strategically important because it moves our A.C.C.E.S.S. ecosystem from “What did the student learn?” to the much more powerful question: “How did the student learn, and can they intentionally use that process again?”

This tool is more than a reflection form. It functions as a metacognitive coach that gradually teaches students to plan, monitor, evaluate, and transfer their learning strategies.

AI Reflection Coach

This is one of the stronger A.C.C.E.S.S. tools because it addresses a very common classroom response—“I don’t get it”—and teaches students to move from frustration to identifying the actual barrier.

I is designed around this progression:

“I don’t get it.” → “What part don’t I get?” → “Why is it difficult?” → “What do I need?” → “What can I try?” → “How will I know if it helped?”

What Happens When You Teach “Evaluating Point of View” Lesson to Struggling Readers the Right Way

As a Special Education and English Learner teacher, I used this lesson with students who struggle with reading comprehension and written expression at my Washington DC school. My classroom is a unique hub where the Digital Literacy Academy meets the high-stakes world of workforce preparation. My students—brilliant, resilient young adults with significant cognitive disabilities—are often … Read more
